By Kirtland Community College Communication and Marketing DepartmentGRAYLING, MI. (October 5, 2026) – Kirtland Community College is pleased to announce the "Meet the Candidate" event on Thursday, October 8, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. This engaging forum will take place in the community rooms at the Grayling Campus, providing an opportunity for the community to meet and interact with representatives from US House of Representatives, 1st District, Michigan House of Representatives, 99th District Michigan House of Representatives, 105th District Michigan Senate, 36th District Kirtland Community College Board of Trustees.
With a different format than previous years, each candidate in attendance will make a brief 3-minute statement introducing themselves to the audience. After these statements are concluded, the audience will be able to mingle with the candidates for informal conversations for the remainder of the evening.
While some of the candidates have indicated that they'll be unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts, currently seven confirmed in-person attendees across the invited contests.
“As part of Kirtland’s mission, we aim to provide civic engagement opportunities for our community. This event is a great opportunity for citizens in the Kirtland region to meet candidates and ask them questions about the issues that matter most to them,” said Kirtland’s Vice President of Academic Affairs John Thiel.
The "Meet the Candidate" event is a non-partisan forum organized by Kirtland and the League of Women Voters to encourage civic engagement among the community. Attendees will have the chance to connect directly with the candidates about their policies, visions for the future, and how they plan to address key issues.
"The League of Women Voters works to help voters learn about their candidates through our nonpartisan printed voter guide (being distributed now), our nonpartisan online voter guide (vote411.org) and at events such as this, Meet the Candidate." Said Christina Schlitt, President of the League of women voters of North Central Michigan.
This event is open to the public, and all community members, students, and faculty are encouraged to attend. Doors will open at 6 PM, and seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Attendees are encouraged to come prepared with questions to ask the candidates during the break out session following the opening statements.
