Early Detection Saves Lives: Prioritize Routine Breast Cancer Screenings
HDNW encourages residents to know their risk and take proactive steps toward early detection

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness this October, the Health Department of Northwest Michigan (HDNW) is reminding residents about the life-saving importance of early detection and routine mammogram screenings.

“Breast cancer is the number two most common cancer for women in the United States,” said Melissa Hahn, Director of Family Health. “Through the Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Navigation Program (BC3NP) eligible residents who are uninsured or underinsured can access recommended breast cancer screenings and follow-up services. When breast cancer is found while it is still confined to the breast, the five-year survival rate is 99 percent.”

    Simple Steps to Be Proactive

            • Know your risk. Learn about your family health history and discuss it with your health care
provider to see how it may affect your risk of breast cancer.

            • Get screened. For people at average risk, routine mammograms are recommended beginning at
age 40. Talk with your health care provider about the screening schedule that is right for you.

            • Know your normal. Be familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel. If you notice a change, talk with your health care provider.
            • Make healthy lifestyle choices. Maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol consumption, and getting regular physical activity may help lower your risk of breast cancer.

    Help Is Available
HDNW’s BC3NP nurse practitioners can help eligible women access breast cancer screenings, diagnostic and follow-up services, and help to connect them with resources for prevention and early detection. If a screening or evaluation through BC3NP results in a breast cancer diagnosis, BC3NP can help connect the client to the care and resources she needs.
